George Abbott Lucey oral history interview, 1982.

George Abbott Lucey was captured by Field Marshal Irwin Rommel at the Battle of Zidu Bu Zid in North Africa during World War II. The collection (audiotapes and transcription) describe his two-year internment (1943-1945) as a German prisoner of war, his subsequent escape from OFLAG 64 in Szubin, Poland, and his trip to Odessa, traveling with the Russian Army. The audiotape interview was conducted at George Lucey's home in Clearwater, FL, in 1981. There are two sets of interview tapes (eight tapes each) as well as 3 copies of the transcription.

Originally from Swampscott, MA, George Lucey graduated from Norwich University in the class of 1938. He was a member of Iota Pi Kappa fraternity and played interfraternity basketball and baseball. He also served on the staffs of the War Whoop and Guidon. Lucey was a mainstay of the Norwich band. Serving in World War II, George Lucey was captured by Field Marshal Irwin Rommel at the Battle of Zidu Bu Zid in North Africa. He was interred as a German prisoner of war for two years.
